Our research has found that more older people are renting, and this number is increasing.

To help older tenants understand and navigate the rental market we have developed some practical tools. The tools are designed for older people themselves, family members and service providers who are supporting older people, and landlords/property managers who want to support their older tenants.

In 2021, with the assistance of Te Tari Kaumātua, the Office for Seniors we updated the set of tools. Below are the most recent versions for download.

The Going for Good Renting Tool is a practical information tool for older people, covering topics like tenants’ rights, finding a rental and being a successful tenant. It includes stories from older renters, tips, checklists, and where to go for more information.

Rapid Reference for Older Renters


This tool will help you to quickly get guidance about some common renting issues. It covers key ‘need to know’ information in a handy 6-page guide, and can be used with the Going for Good Renting toolkit or standalone.



Housing and Supporting Older Tenants: A Landlords Guide


This guide gives landlords some practical suggestions about how to support older tenants to live safely and comfortably.
